The decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing regarding its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears stunning yet entirely predictable. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the DNC behaves closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building local power to secure victories.
An Environment Resistant to Internal Critique
Hesitant to break with the prevailing attitude of conformity, the committee has stayed within that legacy throughout 2025. Releasing an official autopsy might have shown that party leaders are interested to encourage open debate regarding the errors which allowed Donald Trump to become president again. Instead, the committee is acting under the pretense that there's nothing to be learned following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.
"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? If not, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," a justification which was presented to justify concealing the report.
Key Issues a Report Would Have Addressed
A genuine analysis worth its salt would not dodge a series of difficult topics. Among them are:
- Voter Disengagement: The loss of millions of voters who voted for the party's candidate during the previous election proved pivotal in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
- The Decision to Seek Re-election: The determined choice by a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with a very late step-aside, has been criticized as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
- Failing the Working-Class Base: During a time of economic anxiety, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to powerful financial backers while failing to address the impact of profit-seeking.
- A Foreign Policy Effect: The refusal to reconsider a policy position regarding the situation in Gaza allegedly caused losing many voters, especially with young people, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
- A Decline in Youth Allegiance: Research demonstrates a huge drop-off of Democratic support among young voters.
A Record of Evasion
Choosing secrecy is consistent with a longstanding habit to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls a situation where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's insistence on running for re-election until a catastrophic public debate performance led to a change.
At the same time, a significant majority of the electorate were repeatedly informing surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to run again.
Financial Questions
A substantive report could probe issues about where money went, such as the amounts went to high-priced advisors and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a staggering sum in a short period.
A Broader Problem
Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy points to a submission to the existing power structure responsible for an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The message to the party's base – which includes countless loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to see the lessons the leadership have learned from a report compiled from conversations with insiders.
A political entity unable to honestly assess its mistakes will struggle to climb out of the rut that proved so helpful to their opponents.
