Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
