Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
