Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Smog Post Diwali

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x higher than acceptable limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

For the past four years, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the capital as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed local administration appealed to the highest court to seek a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities agreed to the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around midnight to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Financial Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities each year in the city.
