A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
